This week's Sermon: "What is the Bible?" (2 Timothy 3:10-17)

I want to counter this widespread practice of taking personal experience instead of the Bible as the authority for living. I want to pull the Christian Scriptures back from the margins of the contemporary imagination where they have been so rudely elbowed by their glamorous competitors, and reestablish them at the center as the text for living the Christian life deeply and well. I want to confront and expose this replacement of the authoritative Bible by the authoritative self. I want to place personal experience under the authority of the Bible and not over it. I want to set the Bible before us as the text by which we live our lives, this text that stands in such sturdy contrast to the potpourri of religious psychology, self-development, mystical experimentation, and devotional dilettantism that has come to characterize so much of what takes cover under the umbrella of 'spirituality.'" (Eugene Peterson, Eat This Book)

Main Idea: The Bible calls us into covenantal relationship with God.

Sermon Application Questions
This sermon series: A Year of Biblical Literacy

This week's New City Catechism Question # 2:
What is God?

Answer: God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. He is eternal, infinite and unchangeable in his power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice and truth. Nothing happens except through him and by his will.

  • Please sign up for the online newsletter! You can sign up right now at christchurchsf.org/#newsletter or during the break at the resource table.
  • Please check out the online resources for A Year of Biblical Literacy. They will be sent out in the newsletter, but they can also be found online at readscripture.org. Let's read the Bible together as a congregation this year, and the sermon series, reading schedule, videos, lectures and discussions should help us do this.
  • Mission and Vision Sunday on Sunday, January 31st, after service. Please mark it in your calendars! Lunch will be provided and we will be going over together as a church the last year and the year ahead.
Mission Highlight: Volunteer Open House on Sunday, January 24th, after service! It is such a huge blessing how many different people, with different talents and personalities, are serving in so many different ways on Sundays. Through the volunteers at Christ Church on Sundays, we are able to bring friends and all who do not know Christ, and invite them to come and see our public worship.  And through the way we serve one another, the songs we sing, the message that is preached, and the warmth and welcome of our community and family in Christ, we can show who our God, Jesus Christ, is. We are so deeply thankful to all the volunteers at Christ Church, who use their weekends and time off, to serve in this way.

That being said, we need more volunteers! And perhaps God is calling you! The different ministry leaders are planning to have a Volunteer Open House on Sunday, January 24th, where tables will be set up, light snacks, and fliers about the various volunteer roles that need to be filled! The ministry leaders as well as some current volunteers will be there to answer questions.

If God is calling you to serve, please stick around and check it out! And if it's not a season where you are called to serve, then please pray for us, and feel free to check out what the different ministries are doing. These ministries are: Hospitality, Tech and Audio, Praise and Worship, Liturgy, Children's Ministry, and Set-up and Take-down.  Thank you so much!
