Mission and Vision 2016

Sunday, January 31st, 2016

As a church family over a meal, we had a chance to reflect on our Mission and Vision and how this looked in 2015, and to continue to pray and look forward to what it would look like in 2016.

In Christ

In 2015, we went through three sermon series to keep us rooted and growing in Jesus Christ:

  • "The Ethics of Jesus" where we went through the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7
  • "How Jesus Builds His Church" where we went through early church history and how it applies to us today in the book of Acts.
  • "Cradle, Cross, Crown" where we went through the prophecies of the Messiah and how they were fulfilled in Jesus in Isaiah 53

This year, in 2016, we will be doing a sermon series called "A Year of Biblical Literacy", where we will read through the Bible together as a congregation, with other churches in the Bay Area. A big thank you to Reality SF and A Jesus Church in Portland for helping put this together. Resources for this include a reading schedule, videos, guest lectures, and Community Group discussions.

Together

Welcome Lunches: We have continued to have and plan on having Welcome Lunches 3-4 times a year to welcome newcomers and get them plugged into our community. Welcome Lunches happen over lunch after a Sunday service with at least one elder, volunteers from the Hospitality Team, and any newcomers who are interested. We hope to take questions, connect them to leaders and get to know each other better.

New Community Groups: In 2015, we started a new Community Group that currently meets on alternate Sundays in Hayes Valley and Telegraph Hill.  In 2016, we are in need of more new Community Groups as some of our current ones are bursting at the seams!

Community Group Leader Training: In order to start new Community Groups, we will need to train and establish new Community Group Leaders. We will be having a Community Group Leader Training early on in the year to support and send new leaders out.

Interview with Seng Chin: Our dear brother, Seng Chin has returned from Singapore to San Francisco to support and lead at Christ Church. We got to have an interview with him to better get to know him.

For the City and the World

GRAFTED: A Church Plant Incubator: Starting in 2016, our church will be a part of a network of churches that support newer church plants in San Francisco by providing resources, mentoring and opportunities alongside several other churches in the Bay.

Citizens Update: Citizens is a church plant we partner with and support in San Francisco. Some praises from 2015 include four homeless friends who are now living indoors, with newest baptized believers still growing. Some prayer requests for 2016 include asking for God's favor in finding a space, full funding, a guiding elder to help lead, and that about 50 non-believers in the Citizens community right now would come to Jesus.

Malawi Update (July trip)

In 2015, we praise God for the donated land for the new community center in Malawi. In 2016, we hope to have a new community center built with resources and people to use the space to serve the most vulnerable. Please consider going to visit our brothers and sisters at Hands at Work in July 2016 with our sister churches Grace Alameda and Wellspring.

Support for Michelle Tom: Last year, in 2015 a dear sister from Christ Church, Michelle Tom, committed to serving with Hands at Work in South Africa, Malawi and Zambia, for a year. This year, she has committed to living there and serving there indefinitely. Praise God for the work he is doing, and please pray for her and consider supporting her as she serves.

Vilassar de Mar in Spain (Youth Trip)

In 2016, Wellspring is planning to visit our partner in Spain with its Youth Group--middle school aged students and older. Please pray for them and consider joining as a youth or volunteer! Esglesa Evangelica has shared their prayer requests with us in recruiting people for support and leadership roles.

Cuba Partnership Pilot: In 2015, Pastor Toby was able to visit Cuba with a team of church leaders across the United States. Prayers for Cuba as its recent sociopolitical changes open new doors for the gospel to spread. Please also pray for wisdom and discernment as to which 1-2 churches we can partner with for the kingdom there.

We reflect and thank God for the work he is doing, and continue to look forward to what God has in store for us as we are sent out. We have the mission and vision that Jesus gave in his Great Commission, that here in San Francisco, in and through Him, Christ Church makes disciples in Christ, Together for the City and the World.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2
