Sunday Recap for January 15, 2017
A Community Being Transformed for the City

Mission Highlight 1 22

Mission Highlight: This week, we got to watch a video that Toby took in Malawi while he was there in October. Manuel Kamnkhwani Banda, Director and Founder of Logos Ministries in Lilongwe, Malawi shared about the work they do. They:

  • Train church leaders (elders, deacons, Sunday school teachers) in rural areas on Christian doctrine and Scripture
  • Bring together pastors from different churches and areas and go through a starter pack on the basic knowledge of Scripture
  • Offer the Mukanyo Distance Program, where students can get degrees in theology from an accredited school in South Africa
  • Translate and offer theological readings and materials to the people of Malawi
  • Publish commentaries of church leaders in Malawi

Basically, they seek to support and train church leaders in Malawi, regardless of denomination, in the city and surrounding rural areas for the villages to be transformed.

If you didn't have a chance to check it out, please do!

Question #2: What is God?

Answer: God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. He is eternal, infinite, and unchangeable in his power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice, and truth. Nothing happens except through him and by his will.
This Week's Sermon: “A Community Being Transformed for the City” (Romans 12:14-21)

As God fills us and gives us the heart and mind of Christ, (1 Cor. 2:16; Gal. 2:20), we are freed from seeing ourselves as the center of the world and enabled to become other-aware.” (Ken Sande)

“Differences are not intended to separate, to alienate. We are different precisely in order to realize our need of one another.” (Desmond Tutu)

“If we do an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, we will be a blind and toothless nation.” (Martin Luther King Jr.)

For in fact this was the crucial work of the Only Begotten: to bring together things divided and to reconcile the alienated.” (Chrysostom)

“Treat your enemy kindly, for that may make him ashamed and lead to his repentance. In other words, the best way to get rid of an enemy is to turn him into a friend, and so overcome evil with good.” (F.F. Bruce)

Main idea: Overcome evil with good.
