Sunday Recap for July 2, 2017:
Priority and Authority

Mission Highlight: Thank you Lauren for sharing about District 7 in San Francisco! Here is what she shared:

Neighborhoods in District 7 include Twin Peaks, West Portal, St. Francis Wood, Balboa Terrace, Ingleside, Stonestown, Lakeside and Park Merced.

  • Estimated 54% White, 35% Asian, 10% Latino, 3% Black
  • 62% with bachelors or higher
  • 30% born overseas

A few populations in this district that we can be lifting up in prayer are the college students at SF State and City College, the young people in the Youth Detention Center, and the New Life Church of the Nazarene.

One population that I have personally had the opportunity to serve while living in District 7 is the patient population at Laguna Honda Hospital. Laguna Honda is a modern almshouse, dedicated to serving San Francisco’s poor. They offer long term medical care for seniors and adults with disabilities. Many of the patients there have had hard lives, facing struggles of homelessness and addiction, in addition to the chronic illnesses and disabilities that brought them to Laguna Honda. I have been volunteering on Saturday mornings doing one-on-one visits with patients on the Positive Care, or HIV/AIDS, unit. In addition to one-on-ones, I also am part of the “No One Dies Alone” team, which works to provide bedside companions to those who are dying without friends or family by their side. Laguna Honda has provided me a place to hear the narratives of those who are disadvantaged in our city, and has served to remind me on a weekly basis that every single person in our city is an image bearer of God.

Heavenly Father, we want lift up District 7 to you this morning. We pray that you will watch over the leaders who represent this district, Lord, that you might provide them with guidance and wisdom.

We pray for our brothers and sisters living in this district, that you might equip them to be a salt and light in their neighborhood. Father, we also want to pray for specific groups in District 7. We pray that you would look after the kids at the youth detention center, and that you would guide their paths. We pray for the university students as well - that you would provide for their campus ministries, and call student believers to bear witness to their peers. We also want to lift up New Life Church of the Nazarene. May you work through them, and bless them as they seek to build your kingdom in this city. And lastly, we want to lift up Laguna Honda Hospital to you. We pray that the patients would experience healing and humanity during their time spent in the hospital, and that they might realize that they are image bearers of You.

We thank you for this time of prayer that you have given us, Lord. We pray that you would be reminding us to pray for the welfare of our city as we go into the new week.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Question #24: Why was it necessary for Christ, the Redeemer, to die?

Answer: Since death is the punishment for sin, Christ died willingly in our place to deliver us from the power and penalty of sin and bring us back to God. By his substitutionary atoning death, he alone redeems us from hell and gains for us forgiveness of sin, righteousness, and everlasting life.
