Sunday Recap for December 3, 2017:
Ethics and Identity

Please join us on Sunday, December 24th, 10:30 AM at 460 Arguello Blvd. for a family-friendly, Christmas Eve Carol Service! It will be a joyous time to remember and celebrate the Son of God who came to us as a humble baby and will return again as King!

It will be a shorter service with singing and a Christmas message--a perfect opportunity to invite family and friends to hear and partake in the good news!

Baked goods from Arsicault will also be provided, along with special treats and activity bags for the kiddos, so please come early! We hope to see you there!
Week 1: Advent devotional: The brokenness of our world is inescapable. Watching a newscast or quickly scrolling through your social media timeline reveals atrocity upon atrocity. Whether it’s acts of terror or nations warring or genocide or injustice or senseless acts of murder, we remain a people bombarded with this reality: Things are not as they should be. The season of Advent breaks into our broken world and reorients our hearts around a better reality—the present darkness which shrouds creation has been defeated in Jesus Christ and will one day be fully realized. Advent is a turning away from despair and toward hope. The prophet Isaiah heralded this hope to Israel, and like him we can look ahead in hope when the instruments of war, destruction and death of our day are hammered into plowshares and pruning hooks. The Light of the World shines into the darkness. Let us join with the prophet Isaiah in his exhortation, “O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD.”
Mission Highlight: Thank you Steve for sharing with us about OMF International this Sunday. He shared about the work he has done with OMF, first in Japan with his family, and now in the states, helping churches here have a mission focus and strategize. Rather than having churches serve missions organizations, he is coaching them on how to be involved directly. He then prayed for us as a congregation, reminding us that Jesus was the first missionary to us, and we, like him, are sent out to share the good news of salvation in Christ. If you have questions or are interested in getting more involved please email him at churches@omf.org!
Question #48: What is the church?
Answer: God chooses and preserves for himself a community elected for eternal life and united by faith, who love, follow, learn from, and worship God together. God sends out this community to proclaim the gospel and prefigure Christ’s kingdom by the quality of their life together and their love for one another.
Link to this Week's Sermon: “Ethics and Identity" (1 Peter 3)

“Your real, new self (which is Christ's and also yours, and yours just because it is His) will not come as long as you are looking for it. It will come when you are looking for Him…Look for yourself, and you will find in the long run only hatred, loneliness, despair, rage, ruin, and decay. But look for Christ and you will find Him, and with Him everything else thrown in.” (C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity)
Main idea: Ethics flow from identity.
