Sunday Recap for September 16, 2018:
Promise and Response

Mission Highlight: This Sunday, we installed our second diaconate cohort. These men and women were recognized by our members of being of good repute and full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. They were (left to right): Andrew, Shane, Vanessa, Amanda, Nancy, Sung Jin, Jeff, Stephanie, and Luke. The Lord Jesus Christ has given gifts to his people who find their purpose in building up the church. Our deacons and deaconesses are our front-line responders who lead by example of a deeper understanding of loving and serving so that we can all continue to build one another up in love.

The deacons and deaconesses affirmed that they believed that the triune God was calling them to this office, of the infallibility of Scripture, that they subscribed to the doctrinal standards of the faith and practice of Christ Church, and that they promised to carry out their office faithfully in submission to the church.

Seng prayed for this diaconate cohort, thanking God for them and for our church, and asked God for his Spirit to help us grow in grace and support and encouragement of the diaconate. He asked for humility and growth to maturity, initiative to show God's love through their service, and for them to model teachability and kindness.

Also, Seng shared that we have called out Carter and George from the diaconal process to be a part of the elder affirmation process which will start in October and hopefully be completed by the spring.

We had a special announcement for The Porch's Vision Nights happening on Sunday dinners on September 16th and September 30th. Toby introduced Jon with a little background on Christ Church's partnerships with church planting with Grace Alameda, Citizens, Redemption, and now The Porch, to sacrificially love and serve the city and asked people in our congregation to pray through whether God was calling them to join The Porch and the work they are doing.

Then Jon shared about how they started thinking about church planting in 2011 and have been at Christ Church for a year and a half as a part of his training. Jon was born and raised in SF and plans to live and die here, and dreams of seeing fellow San Franciscans worshipping God in heaven with him. They've been having Sunday dinners during the summer, and now they are getting together their core team. The Vision Nights will talk about why they're church planting, why church planting is important, and what The Porch will look like--not taking believers from other churches but reaching out to the northeast part of the city--and also be a time of prayer and brainstorming. Please contact Jon if you would like to know more about The Porch or if you want to check out a Vision Night!

Jon also asked for our prayers because church planting will only succeed if the Holy Spirit is jumping out in front of them, and even if The Porch starts out small, if we were all behind him prayer, whether that was in our community groups, prayer groups, or individually, that would be great.

Question #36: What do we believe about the Holy Spirit?

Answer: That he is God, coeternal with the Father and the Son, and that God grants him irrevocably to all who believe.
This Week's Sermon: “Promise and Response" (Genesis 39)

"God is more concerned with conforming me to the likeness of His Son than leaving me in my comfort zones. God is more interested in inward qualities than outward circumstances – things like refining my faith, humbling my heart, cleaning up my thought life and strengthening my character."
– Joni Eareckson Tada

Main Idea: God is always working for good.

Please email Jon if you're interested in going!

-9/30: Next Church Family Picnic at Off the Grid at the Presidio after service on Sunday, September 30th. A great opportunity to get to know folks better and build fellowship and community! Bring a lunch or buy from one of the many food trucks there! We will be meeting at Rick's Tree.
