Sunday Recap for September 23, 2018:
Yes to God, No to Idols

Mission Highlight: Thank you Becky for sharing our fifth out of six Mission Highlights on our church's Malawi trip in May. She shared some facts about Malawi: it is a nation of 18 million people with 62% below the poverty line, and life expectancy at birth is 55 years (compared to 78 in the US) and an estimated 1 million people are infected with HIV, with only 70% aware of their infection, and of those aware only 60% receive treatment. As a physician, it was hard for Becky to close her eyes to the fact that 75% of the 1.2 million orphans became orphans because of HIV/AIDS. The rate of infections and lack of resources was maddening. At one time it was believed up to 40% of babies were born with HIV.

Becky carried with her this card which says from the Bible (ESV) "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy" to remind herself to pray and to remember, despite the geographic and linguistic distance.

Becky also shared about the organizational structure of Hands at Work, the ministry we partner with, who serve in eight countries in Africa. Each country has several communities they support, and we visited the community of Mcheneka. The children are directly helped by Careworkers in the community, who identify children with the greatest need and help them access basic health care, food, and education. The Careworkers live in the communities themselves and are supported by the local church.

Service Centers support several communities, helping with meals, logistics, and providing prayer and Bible teaching for the Careworkers. Regional Support Teams help oversee Service Centers in different countries, and the Hub is in South Africa.

Becky shared about how we got to know some of those in the Service Center, have a day to encourage and support Careworkers, and also spend time with the children, both in the Life Center where they would gather for a meal and play, and also making home visits.

Becky then led us in prayer for the children, to comfort them, heal them, and protect them. She thanked God for the Careworkers and asked God to strengthen them physically and spiritually. She prayed for our brothers and sisters in the Service Center, to give them wisdom and encouragement. She also prayed for a cure and vaccine fro HIV, and for all who are infected to be cured. She also prayed that we would not be distanced from suffering but to care for the poor and speak for those with no voice.

Question #37: How does the Holy Spirit help us?

Answer: The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin, comforts us, guides us, gives us spiritual gifts and the desire to obey God; and he enables us to pray and to understand God’s Word.
This Week's Sermon: “Yes to God, No to Idols" (Judges 10:6-16)

“In the biblical view, anything created--anything at all that is less than God, and most especially the gifts of God--can become idolatrous if it is relied upon inordinately until it becomes a full-blown substitute for God and, thus, an idol. The first duty of believers is to say yes to God; the second is to say no to idols.” -Os Guinness
